Bicholim locals put on alert as Anjunem dam nears capacity

MAPUSA

The Water Resources Department (WRD) has issued an alert to four villages in Bicholim, warning that water from the Anjunem Dam may soon exceed its maximum capacity due to continuous heavy rainfall over the past week. The department cautioned that the rising water level could force authorities to release excess water into nearby rivers.

The water level in Anjunem Dam is nearing the critical 90 RL/meter mark, prompting concerns. "Impounding of water in the Anjunem Dam commenced from June 20. As of July 11, the water level has reached 86.95 meters. It is expected that the dam will fill up to 90.00 RL/meters within a few days, necessitating the release of excess water," explained Shailesh Pokle, Executive Engineer, WRD.

Pokle noted that any excess water from the dam would be channeled through the Costi Nadi and Valvanti River during low tides, potentially raising the water levels of these rivers.

Residents of the four affected villages -- Keri, Morlem, Parye, and Karapur-Sarvan -- have been advised to exercise caution and take necessary precautions. The WRD has specifically urged people to be vigilant while washing clothes, bathing, or taking their cattle to the riverside, and to avoid crossing the rivers during this period.

The alert aims to prevent any accidents or damage as the region braces for the possibility of increased water flow. The WRD continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to take further measures to ensure the safety of the residents.
