The body of a 19-year-old youth from Ankola in Karnataka, who had been reported missing since Friday, was recovered from the sea at Polem beach in South Goa on Sunday.
According to Canacona Police, a missing person complaint regarding Vigneshwar Naik (19), a resident of Ankola, was registered at the police station on February 20, 2026.
On Sunday afternoon, lifesavers on duty at Polem beach spotted a body floating in the Arabian Sea near the shoreline. The body was retrieved from the water and later identified as that of the missing youth. The identification was confirmed by the deceased’s uncle.
The body, which was in a highly decomposed state, was sent to South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao, for post-mortem examination.
Police said the autopsy could not ascertain the exact cause of death due to advanced decomposition. However, tissue samples have been preserved for diatom analysis to aid further investigation.
An unnatural death case has been registered under Section 194 of the BNSS. Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Ramdas Doifode of Canacona Police Station. The body has been handed over to the family for final rites.
