Calangute assault case: 3 touts beaten, one FIR registered

PANAJI

Barely 20 days after a violent clash between armed bouncers and two youths at Tito's Lane, three assaults in a single night have once again raised concerns over law and order in the tourist frequented Calangute belt.

The incidents occurred between midnight and 1 am on November 4, when a group of locals allegedly assaulted three touts at Umtavaddo and at two other locations along the Calangute-Baga road.

Sources revealed that the assailants accused the touts of engaging in illegal touting activities. However, the touts claimed they have frequently been targeted due to demands for bribes to continue their activity.

CCTV footage accessed by The Goan shows a group of men assaulting one of the victims with a wooden stick, kicks and blows; and even dragging him onto the road.

Sources states that three such assaults occurred consecutively with all three victims injured. One of them is reportedly being treated for serious injuries at Goa Medical College.

Only one FIR has been registered so far while Calangute police stated they are examining two other assault cases. CCTV footages of other locations are being sought with statements of victims also in the process of being recorded.

If not only the clash between bouncers and the two youths reported last month, another assault on a family from Pune by two local taxi drivers on October 31 raised concerns. Calangute Police arrested the accused in both the cases.

After a series of violent clashes in the coastal belt, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had ordered strengthening patrolling particularly during the night hours.
