Calangute Police Inspector Nolasco Raposo was on Thursday suspended in connection with the assault and vandalism case at the Souza Lobo restaurant, the popular beach-side restaurant on the Calangute shore.
Police Inspector Lakshi Amonkar has now been given charge of the Calangute police, while the State government has handed over the assault and vandalism case to the Crime Branch.
Late Tuesday night, a group of around 30-50 persons barged into the Souza Lobo restaurant allegedly armed with swords, iron rods and glass bottles and vandalised the place.
In the ensuing scuffle, five to six staff of the Souza Lobo were injured, two of whom critically, and were undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
The owners of Souza Lobo claimed that Tuesday’s incident was the third attack on the restaurant by the owner of the neighbouring property. They also said the police had failed to take action against the culprits.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had personally intervened in the matter and had directed the Goa Police to take strict action. Police later arrested some of the accused on Wednesday evening.
