The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has granted approval for demolition and reconstruction of the iconic Campal Lighthouse.
The department of Captain of Ports had moved a proposal seeking CRZ clearance for demolition and reconstruction of the lighthouse at Campal for proper navigational purposes.
As per the applicant, the structure of the lighthouse is in extremely dilapidated condition and accordingly the CoP consulted the public works department for necessary advice.
“PWD carried out various structural analysis and concluded that the structure cannot be rehabilitated and has to be demolished and a new structure has to be constructed at its place,” the project proponent said.
The Authority, during its meeting held last month, while granting approval, directed CoP to undertake a rapid environment impact assessment (EIA) study to understand the impact and to follow the mitigation measures for demolition and reconstruction of the structure.
The structure is located partly in CRZ II, partly in CRZ IB (intertidal zone), partly in CRZ IV-B and partly outside CRZ area as per Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) 2011.
The Authority has also granted its nod for motorable access to the lighthouse in a bid to allow vehicles to facilitate demolition and reconstruction works.
The CoP has requested PWD to take up the road construction project to reach the lighthouse site inorder to move the necessary machinery.
“Further, the PWD informed that the proposed road falls in CRZ-II area. Accordingly, CoP is proposing for the motroable access to the lighthouse,” it said.
