The coastal villages -- Cacra village in Tiswadi and Arambol in Pernem, are among 100 climate-resilient coastal fishing villages that the Central government has announced to develop to enhance the economic resilience of coastal communities impacted by climate change.
Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar on Wednesday chaired a meeting to discuss the development of the two fishing villages that will be developed under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with expenditure of Rs two crore per village.
Post meeting, Halarnkar said that under the scheme, the State will receive complete central government funding towards the development of essential fisheries infrastructure and facilities.
“70 per cent of the cost is allocated towards infrastructure while 30 per cent is for fisheries economic activities,” he said.
The WAPCOS (PEA) appointed by the government has prepared the detailed project report and the same has been approved by the National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, the Minister said.
The initiative aims to improve resilience against climate change by providing facilities like fish drying yards, processing centres, and emergency rescue facilities, while also supporting climate-resilient practices such as seaweed cultivation and green fuel initiatives.
The fisheries development activities in the identified coastal fishermen villages shall be mainly focused on creation of basic infrastructure facilities required for smooth conduct of fisheries post-harvest related activities like fish drying platforms, fish markets, ice plants, cold storages etc, creation of climate resilient and sustainable livelihood opportunities like seaweed farming, ornamental fish farming and other aquaculture activities for supporting the fisherfolk living in the coastal fishing villages.
