Canacona locals irked over power cuts and poor roads

Politicians, authorities blamed for failing to address woes

CANACONA

Frequent power cuts and bad roads in different parts of Canacona have come in for severe public criticism, with residents blaming leaders and authorities for failing to address these problems.

“In Canacona, we have no administration, no electricity department, no municipal council, no Mamlatdar and no MLA. Why?,” asked a visibly upset Socorro da Silva, a resident and tourism entrepreneur at Palolem.

He complained that erratic power supply has been a problem in the entire Canacona taluka.

“The erratic power supply on Friday has damaged my appliances and those belonging to others in my area as well. This is causing us severe losses amid an unpredictable tourism season. Should this not call for seeking compensation from the department concerned,” da Silva added.

Another resident of Agonda went on to criticise the poor condition of roads in Agonda and other parts of Canacona.

“Do Canconcars want to associate themselves with the notion "Cancon ek emkon" (Canacona is hell)? If not, we must demand the changes we want and pursue it relentlessly till we achieve these changes,” insisted the resident.

Added another Kisan Desai: “We had noticed some road repair works just before the election code of conduct came into effect. But now, everything has stopped and we have no one and nowhere to go after elections got over.”

“The new MLA is hardly available to address grievances on erratic electricity, bad roads and the erratic water supply,” added Desai.
