Central jail inmate who tried self-immolation to be discharged from GMC

The Goa police on Sunday informed that the 32-year old inmate, who attempted to self-immolate, earlier this month in the Central jail, is out of danger and expected to be discharged soon from the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) where he is currently undergoing treatment

The inmate Raju Das, native of Assam, had locked himself inside the dispensary of Colvale jail and attempted to self-immolate, had alleged harassment forcing him to take this step, and is currently being treated at GMC.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Omvir Singh told media persons that the magisterial inquiry is underway and is expected to be complete soon. He said that necessary action would be initiated based on the inquiry findings.

He also informed that the inmate is currently out of danger and would be discharged soon.

Taking cognizance of the incident, the Goa Human Rights Commission had sought reports from the District Magistrate, North Goa and IGP. The Commission sought inquiry and reports by December 10, 2024.
