Chicalim gram sabha turns tense over sewage crisis

The Chicalim gram sabha held on Sunday witnessed heated exchanges as residents raised serious concerns over the growing sewage and garbage issues affecting the area, demanding immediate intervention from higher authorities.

Several villagers voiced frustration over the alleged overflow of sewage and improper waste management, stating that the situation has worsened with increasing population and large-scale developments in the jurisdiction.

Residents insisted that a comprehensive review involving all concerned departments was necessary to prevent further environmental degradation and health risks.

A key demand that emerged from the meeting was the convening of an extraordinary gram sabha in the presence of Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho, along with officials from relevant departments, to ensure accountability and coordinated action.

Villagers stressed that without direct involvement of top authorities, the issues were unlikely to be resolved effectively.

Responding to the concerns, Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav informed the gathering that the panchayat has already initiated steps to address the issue.

He stated that a formal letter has been sent to the Goa State Pollution Control Board, requesting an inspection of sewage treatment plants (STPs) associated with all major projects operating within the panchayat limits.

Yadav said the board has been asked to submit a detailed report on the functioning and compliance status of these STPs, based on which the panchayat will take necessary action wherever required.

He assured residents that the panchayat remains committed to tackling the issue and safeguarding public health.

The gram sabha concluded with residents reiterating their demand for urgent and sustained action, warning that delays could aggravate the already deteriorating situation.
