Neelam Naik, the ward panch of Chicalim panchayat has on Sunday demanded that the fuel pipelines located in the area be immediately removed and that the government close down the oil storage facility immediately.
" I had filed a police complaint and mentioned that the leaked fuel will contaminate our streams and flow into the Zuari River killing our rare window pane oysters and it has just come true.
"The oil tanking companies have come and are clearing the film on the water using a sponge but how long will they do it ? They will not be able to continue at night because there is thick vegetation in the area which is also infested with snakes and the contamination will spread all over," Naik said.
"As of now the water along with fuel traces continues to fill the well and the company has taken as many as 30 tanker loads of water from the well. I appeal to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to intervene immediately and resolve the issue," said Naik
Naik said that the villagers had been demanding removal of the pipelines and the storage tanks as well.
" We have had many disasters in the past due to these pipelines and this we believe is the second case of leakage from the pipelines.
"We now demand that we don't need this pipeline and this business also because till now the company has not even found the reason or the cause of this contamination of our water, " said Naik.
