Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured the Goa Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that he would address the issue of delays in issuing marksheets by Goa University.
Responding to concerns raised by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao during the Zero Hour, Sawant committed to tasking the education secretary with resolving the matter promptly. “I will ask the education secretary to look into the issue and resolve the matter at the earliest,” Sawant stated.
Alemao highlighted the negative impact of these delays on students' academic progress and career prospects. He cited the case of Astle D'Souza, a Cuncolim resident who graduated from Cuncolim Educational Society in 2023.
D'Souza was unable to take a 15-mark Geography practical on the scheduled date in 2022 due to personal difficulties but completed it the following month and passed the course.
Despite this, Goa University failed to update his marksheet despite numerous letters from the Cuncolim college and several visits to the university since 2022.
Alemao revealed that only after issuing a legal notice on July 29, 2024, did the university provide the updated marksheet within a few hours. However, by this time, D'Souza missed the chance to secure a spot in a law programme as admissions had already closed.
“Due to the failure of the Goa University to issue the updated marksheet in time, this child had to waste a whole year in getting admission,” Alemao said.
He further informed the Assembly that more than 20 other students were facing similar issues with delayed marksheets, underscoring the widespread nature of the problem.
