In the wake of a resort staff’s involvement in a case of attempted murder, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has asked the tourism stakeholders to conduct a criminal background check before hiring a candidate. Addressing a press conference after chairing a review meeting on Anjuna assault at police headquarters, he also emphasized on the registration of hotels and other accommodation facilities to pave the way for initiating quick action in case of a crime.
“Ever since we started the hotel registration drive, there's been an increase in the total number of hotels registered in the State. All this while, thousands were operating illegally. I also request hotel owners to verify criminal antecedents before hiring any employee. Workers should possess a labour card, since we have non-Goan employees too,” the CM said.
From 1,200 to over 6,000 hotels, guest houses and other accommodation facilities are currently registered with the Tourism Department. Sawant maintained that the drive for the registration of these facilities and that of the employees with the respective departments is precisely to promote legal and quality tourism.
“We do not want to disturb the business but if these procedures are duly followed, we will be able to provide all the support to legal tourism/businesses,” the CM added.
His statement also comes against the backdrop of Calangute MLA Michael Lobo’s allegations that gangs are threatening business operators in the coastal belt to give protection money.
“He (Lobo) should not make vague allegations. Lodge a complaint or write to me naming these gangs. We are ready to arrest them...Those disturbing legal businesses will face action,” the CM added.
