Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday issued strict instructions to address several pressing issues in South Goa, including the demolition of unsafe buildings in Margao, resolving sewerage problems, and enhancing monsoon preparedness.
At a review meeting held late Thursday at the South Goa District Collectorate, the Chief Minister directed the authorities to raze down old and dangerous buildings in Margao within eight days. He revealed that around 10-12 weak buildings have been identified, with 2-4 slated for immediate demolition. Quotations from contractors will be invited to expedite the process.
Highlighting the urgent sewerage problems affecting the commercial capital, Sawant attributed the issue to damage caused to underground sewage lines during the laying of electric cables. He ordered the contractor/s to immediately fix and restore the sewage system. Additionally, the Chief Minister instructed Public Works Department (PWD) officials to ensure all drains are de-silted before the monsoon to prevent waterlogging and keep roads motorable throughout the season.
Sawant also addressed concerns related to abandoned vehicles, ordering the police and Regional Transport Office (RTO) to tow them away after issuing an eight-day notice. He further instructed authorities to regulate the parking of rent-a-car vehicles and bikes in public areas.
On the issue of abandoned quarries, the government has fenced off around 16 such sites in South Goa, and the Chief Minister urged the public to avoid swimming in these quarries during the monsoon for safety reasons.
'Sonsodo plant soon'
On waste management, Sawant confirmed that a waste treatment plant will soon be established at Sonsodo, although no specific timeline was provided. He noted that the foul odour from the Sonsodo area has been significantly reduced during his tenure.
When questioned about the current practice of transporting waste to Cacora due to the absence of a treatment plant, he assured that the facility at Sonsodo will be set up in the near future.
Addressing concerns over the resurgence of COVID-19 cases nationally and in Goa, the CM reassured the public that the State government has not received any adverse communication from the Central government. He urged citizens not to panic, using his pet phrase ‘Bhivpachi Garaz na’ (No need to worry).
Responding to media reports of illegal construction activities at Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, the CM ordered the Fatorda police and the District Collector to immediately halt the unauthorised work. The Fatorda Police Inspector has been instructed to stop the construction, while District Collector Egna Cleetus assured that the site will be inspected and further action initiated.
