LONDON
Photos on Goan attire have been documented in the Brent Musuem and at an exhibition in the Brent Civic Centre in Brent, North West London, for the first time.
According to social worker Joyce de Souza, the photos on Goan attire had been clicked during the International London Fashion show on September 16, 2024 in Central London, when the Goan community was among the 12 communities to display its traditional attire.
“Traditional Goan attire like the Kunbi and the Navari Saree, Portuguese Goan costumes, etc. were presented by Goan models for the very first time at the London Fashion Show. Pictures clicked at the show are now on display in the Gallery space at the Brent Civic Centre and also at the Brent Library,” said Joyce, organiser of the Goan community fashion show.
“This is also for the first time that photos on Goan attire will be documented in the Brent Musuem and on display at an exhibition in the Brent Civic Centre. The Brent Archives will now store this information for the public and for our future generations. Prior to this, there was no documentation on Goan traditional attire in any museum/archives here in the UK.”
“I would like to thank CVS Brent for organising this photographic exhibition, which will attract interest in our Goan attire.”
On May 19, there was a reception for organisers, models and guests of the We Wear heritage project. Joyce, her husband Elvis Fernandes, Tony alias Gregory Vas, and Sunil D’Souza attended the reception.
“Other models from the Goan community could not attend due to their work schedule. Representatives from the 11 other communities were also present at the event. I had the privilege of speaking about the rich cultural heritage of Goa on this occasion,”said Joyce.
“I also spoke about the Goan community’s significant presence in Wembley, Brent and the UK, as well as their valuable contributions in the UK. It was really nice to meet members of different communities and to share our views on culture.”
Added Elvis Fernandes: “We Goans should be proud of our roots no matter which part of the world we live. It is high time that we introduce and promote our culture and heritage to the world.”
