As the anticipation grows among constituents in North Goa over the delay in Congress announcing its candidate for the parliamentary seat, the two shortlisted contenders on Tuesday expressed cautious optimism regarding the party's decision-making process.
Former Union Minister Ramakant Khalap, one of the contenders for the North Goa seat, emphasised the necessity for the Congress to consider its alliance partners and their demands within the INDIA alliance.
“Congress has formed the INDIA alliance by joining forces with several other parties. By doing so the party is trying to give a united fight against the ruling BJP. Our senior party leaders have to take into consideration the strength and demands of the other parties and that is why it takes time to take certain decisions,” Khalap said defending the delay.
He reassured supporters, stating that despite the delay, the party maintains a strong footing in Goa and remains confident in winning both parliamentary seats.
He highlighted the party's substantial support among Goan voters and the readiness of party workers for the upcoming campaign.
Echoing Khalap's sentiments, Vijay Bhike, another prominent contender for the North Goa seat, affirmed that there is no confusion within the Congress ranks. He underscored the party's commitment to a democratic process and assured that the candidate would be declared at an opportune moment.
Bhike criticised the BJP, alleging confusion within their ranks and emphasising the Congress's readiness to secure victory in both seats.
Both aspirants emphasised the importance of the Congress leadership's careful consideration of all aspects before making a decision.
Bhike expressed gratitude for the enthusiasm shown by the people of Goa, indicating widespread support for the Congress party.
“When people question the delay, it shows that people of Goa have love and concern for the Congress,” Bhike said.
But dissent brews within the party ranks as several foot soldiers voice frustration with the leadership's delay in announcing candidates.
“Many constituents are questioning the prolonged delay in candidate announcement, which could adversely affect our campaigning,” expressed an executive member of the North Goa District Congress.
Another party worker echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The delay is very unnerving. We should have announced candidates ahead of the ruling BJP. This procrastination only adds complexity to our prospects.”
The delay in announcing candidates for the parliamentary seats in Goa has sparked speculation among political observers, yet the contenders remain optimistic about the party's prospects in the upcoming elections.
