CANACONA
Canacona Congress members blocked overloaded and overspeeding trucks at the Polem border checkpost, prompting the mamlatdar and police to intervene to defuse the situation.
Canacona Mamlatdar Gajesh P Shirodkar and Canacona Police Inspector Harish Raut Desai rushed to the Polem check post and were involved in discussions with the agitators, as heavy vehicles were blocked on the highway.
The officials assured to take up the matter with their superiors and the Congress workers later called off their agitation.
A meeting was then convened in the chamber of the Deputy Collector, which was also attended by other government officials, to work out an immediate solution on the issue.
Later speaking to media persons, Congress leader Janardhan Bhandari said over-speeding and overloaded trucks on the narrow Margao-Cuncolim-Canacona stretch of NH66 has been posing a serious threat to people of Canacona.
“The Canacona Congress warriors have agitated on this issue many times in the past and even on August 12, had submitted a memorandum to various authorities demanding a ban on overloaded and over-speeding trucks on Margao-Canacona highway,” said Bhandari.
“But even after 8-9 days after submitting a memorandum and despite the fast-approaching Ganesh Chaturthi, authorities ignored the demand and failed to take any action.”
“As a result, the Canacona Congress workers marched towards the Polem checkpost and stopped overloaded trucks to draw the attention of authorities,” added Bhandari.
