MAPUSA
While the BJP-led group in Mapusa Municipal Council is sitting pretty with 10 of their own councillors and has the support of three others, a prominent councillor of the Congress-backed opposition camp is all set to join the BJP.State BJP President Sadanand Tanavde on Wednesday informed that Nutan Bicholkar who was elected on the Congress-backed panel will be soon joining the saffron party.
“A councillor from the opposition is expected to join us tomorrow,” Tanavde said and disclosed that Bicholkar who represents ward 5 in the civic body will be joining the party.
It’s a fact that the opposition-backed councillor was on the radar of the BJP for quite some time and party leaders were trying to woo her to cross over for the last almost one year.
When contacted, the ward 5 councillor informed that she had indeed received feelers from the BJP leadership and she had conceded to the request to join the party.
“I have been approached by the BJP leaders and I am not opposed to the idea,” Bicholkar said, adding that the move was going on for quite some time.
Mapusa MLA, Joshua D’Souza also admitted that the move of having Nutan Bicholkar join BJP was nothing new and it has been simmering for a very long time.
“It was going on from the time the council was formed and was being pursued for the last almost a year. But I have no information about the latest development on the issue from the party,” D’Souza said.
Sources informed that Nutan Bicholkar could replace current Chairperson, Shubanghi Vaigankar in the council hierarchy.
