Director of Prosecution Poonam Bharne has underscored the need for compassionate and supportive police personnel at every stage in the process of justice for victims.
Highlighting the challenges faced by Public prosecutor, Bharne counselled the police staff to "treat the chargesheet as your baby and not to abandon the chargesheet during trial." She released the Ready Reckoner, a wall poster, to be used in police stations for ready reference on Offences against Children.
She was speaking at the "Justice for every child enhancing prosecution with compassion" a training programme for police officers was organised on Saturday by SCAN Goa, NGO, in collaboration with the Office of the Superintendent of Police, South Goa, in association with VVMs Govind Kare College of Law at the college premises.
Sudiksha Naik, Police Inspector, Anti Human Trafficking Unit, Margao coordinated the entire programme under the guidance of Superintendent of Police, South Goa, Sunita Sawant.
Archana Bhobe explained significant sections of the BNS Act 2023, Goa Children's Act 2003, the issues faced by Public Prosecutors and best practices. Adv Chandan Shirodkar, Member CWC North Goa detailed the role and responsibilities of police, CWC in cases related to POCSO Act 2012 and the JJ Act 2015.
PI Rajesh Job had an interactive session on cyber crime related to children and women and guided officers to be sensitive towards complainants when they approach them. He shared various cases of victimisation of children and women, where they have fallen prey to cyber crimes.
Dr Silvano Dias Sapeco, former head of the forensic department, GMC, Bambolim moderated the open discussion and also briefed the participants on the importance on being sensitive while dealing with violence against children and women. 60 police sub inspectors attended the training programme. They were given Certificates of Participation and mementos were presented to the resource persons.
