Concerns over depressions forming on CHOGM Road, attributed to the recent laying of sewerage pipelines and manholes, have surfaced in a legislative session. The issue was raised through a starred question by Saligao MLA Kedar Naik.
CM Pramod Sawant and PWD Mininster acknowledged that settlements have been observed around the newly constructed manholes, posing potential dangers to vehicles using the road.
Sawant said immediate action has been taken to address these settlements by reinstating them with plain cement concrete or ready mix concrete, at the expense of the agency responsible for the work. Additionally, stringent monitoring is in place to ensure the road remains in a safe and drivable condition.
Regarding the reasons behind these depressions, it was explained that the excavation for manholes reached depths of up to 9.5 metres. The refilling process involved layers of excavated lateritic earth, which were compacted with watering and ramming.
When questioned about accountability for the substandard work, the minister clarified that the agencies awarded the work orders are responsible for refilling the pits and maintaining the road. They are also obligated to reinstate any damage under the "Defect Liability Period," with costs borne by the agency.
Regarding potential actions against the contractor for the substandard work, the minister reiterated that the agencies are responsible for maintaining the pits and ensuring the road is reinstated as needed. Continuous monitoring is being enforced to uphold the road's condition for safe travel.
