All India Lawyers Union, Goa State Committee (AILU) held a peaceful protest at Azad Maidan on Friday with a demand of apology from Law Minister Nilesh Cabral for his alleged derogatory and defamatory remarks against lawyers.
On November 10, Cabral had stated that lawyers were overcharging their clients at the time of conveyancing and registration of deeds and documents. The Law Minister has also warned to change procedures so that advocates will not be required anymore.
AILU Goa State Committee general secretary Adv Victor Savio Braganza said that the Law Minister has no business in deciding what the minimum charges of lawyers should be and that his tirade has made a mockery of the legal profession in Goa and amounts to defamation.
“We cannot tolerate these attacks on the legal fraternity of Goa,” Adv Braganza said.
Lawyers union also demanded the resignation of the Minister.
Savio Braganza said that Law Minister Nilesh Cabral’s derogatory tirade on lawyers charging more fees was condemned by lawyers union across the State and we had sought withdrawal of the statement.
However, it has been two weeks since we had sought withdrawal of statement but the Minister has ignored it. “Thus, we now demand to sack him and the Minister should resign from his post,” Braganza added.
