Despite a ban on plying of heavy vehicles from Chorla Ghat area between Goa and Karnataka, it has been noticed that the order by North Goa District Collector is being flouted.
On Sunday, many citizens from Goa who visited Belagavi expressed concern that heavy vehicles were plying on the route. Also, two accidents occurred due to the heavy traffic during the day. Due to this, displeasure is being expressed and the citizens have raised a question as to why the order is not being implemented. There is a constant demand from the traveling community that the vehicles coming from Belgaum area to Goa should be stopped at the Goa border. For this, it is necessary to appoint police personnel at the said post.
The district collector had ordered to stop heavy traffic from Honda, Sankhali area between Goa and Karnataka a month ago. However, heavy traffic has been banned from the Anmod-Ramnagar area due to ongoing road work. Due to this, the District Collector had modified the order and approved heavy traffic from 10 pm to 5 am to prevent this from affecting the market in Goa. It was clarified in the order that there will be no heavy traffic on this road from 5 am to 10 pm.
Citizens were satisfied with this. But surprisingly, it is now clear that this order is not being implemented at all. Despite the ban for the past 10 days, there is a danger to the lives of the commuters due to heavy traffic during the day. Due to the heavy vehicles coming at high speed, the number of accidents has increased continuously and two such accidents took place on Sunday. Fortunately, there was no loss of life.
As the driver of a heavy vehicle lost control of a vehicle, the said vehicle fell into a ravine on the side of the road while another vehicle hit a tree, causing an accident. There was no loss of life in both the accidents. However, the possibility of a major accident cannot be ruled out if the heavy vehicular traffic is not banned in the coming days.
Meanwhile, some passengers demanded that the order of the collector should be strictly implemented. "The Minister of Public Works Department should pay special attention to this and take special care to ensure that heavy traffic does not ply on this highway during the day time and give such orders to the police and transport department," a local said.
Keri Panchayat members had already demanded a ban on heavy traffic during day time. After that, the district collector issued an order in this regard. This order was welcomed by the Keri Panchayat members. But now as the order of the collector is not being implemented, the Panchayat Mandal has expressed displeasure at the negligence of the government and has said that this will create a danger to the travellers.
