Efforts on to augment supply in Porvorim, Saligao constituencies

PORVORIM

After endless water woes during summers, water supply has improved considerably in Porvorim and Saligao constituencies, even as efforts are on to augment the supply in parts of Reis Magos, Nerul and Socorro.

Since the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at Porvorim has become fully operational, residents on the Porvorim plateau have been receiving adequate water every day.

Some areas of Socorro and Saloi face water shortage and the PWD dispatches water tanker to the affected areas.

Residents of Porvorim had suffered acute water shortage in December 2023 when the water treatment plant was shut down due to non-availability of water from Tilari. With water supply restored from Tillari, the Porvorim WTP generates over 12 MLD of treated water every day.

Some areas of Reis Magos and Nerul still face inadequate water supply and receive water on alternate days. They were particularly affected in October and November 2023, when they did not receive water for several days in a row.

Saligao MLA Kedar Naik then intervened and persuaded the PWD to lay a separate pipeline from the PDA water reservoir to Verem and a second water pipeline from the Verem water reservoir to Nerul. Work to lay these new water pipelines has been completed.

When contacted, Nerul Sarpanch Rajesh Kalangutkar said water supply to residents of Nerul has improved a lot since March 1.

“Water to Reis Magos and Nerul is still being released on alternate days. Work to lay a separate water pipeline from the Verem reservoir to Nerul has been completed but the water connection has not been made as yet. Once water is released through this new water pipeline, the situation will definitely improve,” said Kalangutkar.
