PANAJI
In a further boost to Utpal Parrikar’s decision to contest as an independent candidate in Panaji constituency, former Panaji mayor Uday Madkaikar on Monday said he would support Utpal Parrikar in Panaji constituency to ensure the defeat of BJP candidate Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate.
In another development, another former Panaji mayor Surendra Furtado and his son, Vladimir, visited Utpal at his residence and also extended their support to him in the elections.
“I had an offer to contest on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) ticket, but my supporters advised me not to contest on the TMC symbol as it would divide opposition votes and Babush could benefit from it,” said Madkaikar, while addressing a news conference at his residence in Panaji.
"As a political decision, I have decided to support Utpal in full swing. I will go door-to-door campaign along with Utpal from Tuesday,” said Madkaikar. “After Congress denied me the ticket, many candidates like Valmiki Naik and Utpal Parrikar came to my house to seek support. I had met TMC leader Luizinho Faleiro at his residence and he offered me the party ticket. However, I have finally decided to support Utpal in the elections.”
Madkaikar said he would continue to support his friend and Congress candidate Tony Rodrigues in Taleigao constituency.
“I am still with the Congress party in principle but I have taken this temporary political stand. I had worked hard for the last two months in Panaji constituency, formed booth level committees and also opened two offices in Panaji and Ribandar. My work will certainly help Utpal to win,” said Madkaikar.
