With the farming season having begun, farmers in Vasco have also started their farming activites.
The lone field in Vasco at Belabai saw a flurry of activity as farmers started with the ploughing of the fields with the tractor provided to them by outgoing city Councillor Krishna (Daji) Salkar.
For the last 12 consecutive years, Salkar has been providing these farmers with the necessary farming tools like tractors/ harvesting machines and fertilisers so that the age old tradition of farming continues and is not lost.
Speaking to the media, Anil Gadekar, a farmer said that the worth of these fields was realised more so during the last lockdown when due to the pandemic people had to rely solely on locally grown vegetables.
Farmer Geeta Korgaonkar said that it was because of Salkar that they could manage to maintain these fields and carry out their activities as everytime they needed help, he was the only person who responded to their pleas.
Outgoing ward councillor Rochana Girish Borkar who also was present on the occassion said that it has been years that these farmers face distress but there is no other support that they receive.
"Prople should be more concerned about consuming local vegetables as finally that is how you sustain the economy. It will also help the people with good health while providing good returns to the farmers as well," said Borkar.
Outgoing City ward Councillor Krishna Salkar said that his efforts were only so that the lone field in Vasco was utilised.
"We should be grateful to the farmers who grow our food and they should be given due respect. I request the Government to come up with some attractive schemes and subsidies in order to attract more youth to this noble profession," said Salkar.
