Foreigner found dead, foul play suspected

CANACONA

A foreign national was found dead at Agonda beach late Tuesday evening even as locals suspected foul play in the death of the woman.

According to sources, a few locals on an evening walk noticed something unusual lying at one corner of the Agonda Church property towards the beachside. They went to have a closer look and were horrified to find the body of a woman.

On receiving news of the incident, a police team rushed to the site at about 7.45 pm and cordoned off the area, as locals began gathering at the site.

The woman was in her mid-thirties and was found with her back resting against the compound wall and some bloodstains could be seen in her eyes, mouth and legs. A lady’s purse almost half open was seen on one side of the body.

“The body did not appear to be decomposed and it seems the body had been lying there since early morning and throughout the day,” said a source.

Locals suspected that going by the bloodstains and position of her legs, the woman may have been murdered somewhere else and the body may have been dragged from the beachside and left in the corner of the property of the Agonda Church.

Incidentally, the area where the body was found at an extreme corner of the property which is an isolated area as there is no beach access through that side.

When contacted, a police team led by LPSI Rifa Barretto at the site informed they were awaiting directions from their seniors and declined to provide further details.

“Being a foreign national, we cannot take chances, and the body will be shifted either after the visit by a forensic team or as per their directions,” informed a policeman at the site.

LPSI Barretto further informed it would take some time to shift the body, as pre-examination would be needed to be carried out.

While the people have suspected foul play, police have maintained that only a proper investigation will confirm the nature and cause of death. Canacona police are yet to send the body for an autopsy as they were awaiting the arrival of a forensic team. Investigations are also in progress to identify the deceased foreigner.
