Former Calanbute sarpanch Laxman Parab has voiced strong opposition to the Konkan Railway Corporation's (KRC) decision to enter the bike and car rental market, warning that it would significantly impact local businesses and harm the livelihoods of Goans.
Parab emphasised that the government's primary objective should be to provide opportunities to local residents.
"The KRC move is not right. Locals should be given preference for bike and car rental businesses," he stated.
Parab expressed concerns that the tender process initiated by KRC would attract applicants from across India, thereby disadvantaging Goans.
Parab, who played a key role in securing licenses for rent-a-bike operations in 2002, underscored the need to support unemployed Goans, particularly those aged 45 and above who are registered with the employment exchange.
"Unemployed Goans should be given an opportunity in this business," he urged.
The former sarpanch’s comments add to the growing chorus of local dissent against KRC’s new ventures, highlighting the potential economic fallout for the local community.
