The Children's Court has sentenced former Pernem Municipal Council chairperson Vasudev Deshprabhu to three months of simple imprisonment for abusing and assaulting a minor boy that led to serious injuries.
The incident occurred on October 3, 2013 at Khorlim-Mapusa when disturbed by some boys playing on the fourth floor of the building, Deshprabhu “ who also resides in the same building - asked them to leave the place.
Since the boys refused to go, he allegedly abused and assaulted one of the minors with a baseball bat. The victim was later taken to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bambolim.
Upon going through the case, Children’s Court President Judge Sayonara Telles Laad ordered three months of SI and Rs 1 lakh fine.
As per the order, under section 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) IPC, he is directed to pay fine of Rs 5,000 (in fault to undergo one month SI); another Rs 5,00 fine for offense under section 201 (destruction of evidence) IPC (in default to undergo three months SI); and for offense under section 8(2) of the Goa Children’s Act, the Court has directed three months SI and Rs 1 lakh fine. Failing to pay the fine, the accused is directed to undergo four months of SI.
The order also directs that out of the total fine amount, Rs 50,000 be paid as compensation to the boy through any nationalized bank.
The sentence period has been kept under suspension till December 12 in case he wants to challenge the order in the High Court.
