Panaji: On Monday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the state police will intensify efforts to prevent the import of Ganesh idols made from Plaster of Paris (PoP). This move follows the state’s recent ban on the use of PoP idols for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
During the ongoing legislative assembly session, BJP MLA Premendra Shet raised concerns about the state government’s plan to enforce the ban on PoP Ganesh idols. In response, Chief Minister Sawant assured that the state police would be instructed to closely monitor the state borders to ensure that these idols do not enter Goa.
"We are taking this matter very seriously," Sawant said. "The police will be vigilant at the borders to prevent any illegal imports of Plaster of Paris idols."
State Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira also addressed the issue during the session. He urged the public and members of the House to report any shops found selling PoP Ganesh idols.
"If you find any shop selling these idols, please inform me immediately," Sequeira said. "I will ensure that prompt action is taken against such violations."
The ban on PoP Ganesh idols is part of the state’s broader environmental efforts to reduce pollution caused by non-biodegradable materials. The move aims to promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, aligning with the state’s commitment to environmental conservation.
The Chief Minister and Environment Minister have both emphasized their commitment to ensuring compliance with this environmental initiative.
