Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said the Goa government has no other option but to notify the Mhadei Tiger Reserve before the Bombay High Court deadline of October 24.
In a post on 'X' formerly Twitter, Jairam Ramesh, who as Union Environment Minister in 2011 had first proposed the Mhadei Tiger Reserve in a letter to then Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, said: "Since the Goa bench of Bombay High Court on June 28 this year had directed the Goa govt to declare Mhadei as a Tiger Reserve within 3 months and that the Supreme Court refused to stay this order, the Goa govt is bound to implement the High Court order before October 24."
In the post, Ramesh also quoted his letter of 2011 written Kamat in June 2011 in which he had asked that the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary be declared as a Tiger Reserve.
The Pramod Sawant government meanwhile has challenged the Bombay High Court order before the Apex Court but has failed to obtain a stay against it and is awaiting the opinion of the Advocate General Devidas Pangam before whom the Forest Department has moved a file seeking directions.
