Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said Goa is not just a tourism destination, but has emerged as a sports destination with the state playing host to major events such as National Games, Lusofonia Games and the World beach volleyball.
Saying that Goan sportspersons had earned a name in the field of sports, the Chief Minister said that the National games will benefit budding sports talent from the state to further excel in the field of sports.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the 37th National Games at the Nehru stadium on Thursday, the Chief Minister spoke about plans to set up a Sports University in the state with allied discipline, including skill development, fitness training et al.
Remembering the excellent performance put up by the Indian contingent at the recently held Asian Games, the Chief Minister said the ongoing National Games will help create talent pool for future sports events in the country and abroad. “I am confident that the National games will take the country’s sports to greater heights”, he said.
In his speech, Sports Minister Govind Gawde said the state has been preparing to host the national games for some time now, while complimenting the people of Goa to make the dream a reality.
