Goa NCPOR launches first direct cargo flight to Antarctica with 18 tons of supplies

PANAJI: The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) has successfully sent its first direct cargo flight from Goa to Antarctica, a move aimed at streamlining logistics for India’s polar missions.

The flight, which departed from Manohar International Airport, Mopa, carried 18 tons of essential supplies, including scientific equipment, medicines, and annual provisions for India’s Bharati and Maitri research stations. The operation was supported by GMR Aero Cargo, Alpha Crux, and Ultima Antarctic Logistics.

Dr Thamban Meloth, director of NCPOR, flagged off the DROMLAN-operated IL-76 aircraft yesterday. An official from NCPOR said the direct flight marks a significant step in enhancing logistical efficiency for India’s polar expeditions.

Based in Goa and operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, NCPOR plays a key role in India’s research efforts in polar regions and the Southern Ocean. This first direct air cargo service is expected to improve the reliability and speed of supply chains for India’s Antarctic missions.
