Goacan will observe the National Road Safety Month from January 18 with the focus on safety of pedestrians, cyclists and passengers keeping in mind the rising number of their deaths in road accidents in Goa.
“Our month-long awareness program will involve the village-based consumer forums, campus-based consumer welfare clubs and the road safety and traffic management committees of village panchayats and municipal councils,” states Roland Martins, coordinator, Goacan.
The organisation will focus on checking the mandatory, cautionary and informatorily signages besides those for speed breakers, zebra crossings and speed limits. “There will also be a drive to identify the blockages on pavements and footpaths which create problems for pedestrians,” briefed Martins.
There will be special emphasis on awareness on the importance of the use of ISI marked helmets by pillion riders and the use of seat belts by passengers in the front and back seats of four wheelers.
During the month-long awareness campaign special focus will be on education, engineering and emergency care where information about the role of the lead agency in the directorate of Transport, the road engineering cell of the PWD and the traffic warden and road safety patrol schemes of the traffic police will be provided to consumers.
There will be special focus on awareness about the revised road accident recording and reporting formats, the good Samaritan law and the Goa State interim compensation to road accident victims 2020 (modified) scheme.
