Goa's Muslim Jamaats call for harmony during Ramadan

PANAJI

The Association of All Goa Muslim Jamaats has issued an appeal for peace and communal harmony during the holy month of Ramadan urging the members of their community to organise initiatives that foster harmony like interfaith Iftar gatherings, open mosque visits, charity drives, youth awareness campaigns and Eid Milan events.

The umbrella body, representing Masjid Committees, Madrasas, Dargahs and Muslim organisations across the State, urged citizens to uphold Goa’s legacy of unity and mutual respect.

In its advisory, the Association reminded that Goa has historically been a peaceful State where communities of different faiths have lived together harmoniously. It cautioned against rumours, hate speech and misinformation, particularly on social media, and called on citizens to strengthen interfaith bonds.

The Association encouraged Masjid Committees and community groups to use Ramadan as an opportunity to organise initiatives that foster communal harmony. Suggested programmes include interfaith Iftar gatherings, open mosque visits, charity drives, youth awareness campaigns and Eid Milan events.

Emphasising the importance of Zakat, the Association urged mosques to adopt transparent and collective systems to support poor families, widows, orphans, medical emergencies and education.

It said organised charity during Ramadan could play a vital role in uplifting vulnerable sections of society.

The Association also appealed to government departments, law enforcement agencies, political representatives, NGOs and civil society groups to cooperate in maintaining peace and strengthening interfaith understanding.

“Ramadan is a month of discipline, patience, mercy and service to humanity. Goa must continue to remain a symbol of unity and harmony,” the statement issued by the Association President, Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, said.

Meanwhile, the Hilal Committee of Goa will meet on February 18 at 6 pm at Darul Uloom Ahl-e-Sunnat Ashrafia, Verna, to decide on the sighting of the moon for Ramadanul-Mubarak 1447.

The Association requested all Jamats and members of the Muslim community to abide by the Committee’s decision and not fall prey to rumours.

To avoid confusion, citizens have been advised to directly contact members of the Hilal Committee for clarification. The press note, issued by Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, reiterated the call for cooperation and discipline during the holy month.
