Stating that the Panchayati Raj Act should not be diluted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Wednesday said that the government was trying to weaken the panchayats by bringing amendments to the Act.
Lobo also said that the panchayats should put development proposals before the government or get it done through the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity.
He said with the kind of turnout witnessed on the election day, all his panels in Calangute, Candolim, Arpora-Nagoa and Parra will win with a big majority.
“The government of the day brings amendments to weaken the panchayats. Members and people should go to court and get a stay on such matters. If panchayats are strong then good work will happen in Goa. Grass root democracy is very important,” Lobo said.
The Calangute MLA was speaking to the media after he and his wife Delilah cast their vote in Parra.
Continuing, Lobo said resolutions taken at gram sabhas should be acknowledged and implemented for the good of the village.
He said the village development committees should also exercise their right to get works done so that the village prospers and the people get their work done.
According to Siolim MLA, Delilah Lobo, only those candidates who have the desire to work for the welfare of the people should be given an opportunity in the elections.
