Government surveyors will descend at the Cutbona fishing jetty on Monday to survey and demarcate the 35,000 square metres of land acquired by the Fisheries Department before taking a call on the demolition of the structures dotting the jetty road.
Directions to survey and demarcate the land acquired by the Fisheries Department were issued by Salcete Minister Aleixo Sequeira in the presence of Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar at a meeting with fisheries and revenue officials in the South Goa Collectorate on Friday.
Sequeira told the media that demarcation of the fisheries department land would help the government identify the land at the jetty and the encroachments in the acquired property.
“After the survey and demarcation is complete, we will be in a better position to crack a whip against the structures that are standing along the jetty road. For, there have been claims that these structures are falling in the Communidade property,” he said.
Sequeira, however, pointed out that nothing will prevent the government from razing down the structures standing on the jetty road if they are found to have been built illegally.
Incidentally, the inspection conducted by the revenue officials of the structures along the jetty road shows that eateries are operating in 10 out of the 50 structures. Groceries are also being sold from the other structures, source added.
Officials are believed to have raised the question of whether to straightaway raze the structures or whether to provide alternate space for these basic facilities of eateries or groceries for the migrant workers, who otherwise may stray into the nearby residential localities, causing social issues.
