GWMC, MMC file status reports in HC on disposal of Sonsodo wet waste to Cacora, Saligao plants

Civic body informs court will issue work order to successful bidder for fire prevention system

GWMC, MMC file status reports in HC on disposal of Sonsodo wet waste to Cacora, Saligao plants

MARGAO

The  Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and the Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday filed their status reports in the High Court over the disposal of the Sonsodo wet waste to the Cacora waste treatment plant and the Saligao plant respectively.

The Margao Municipal Council also made a submission to the High Court that the civic  body would issue the work order to the successful bidder to set up the fire prevention system at Sonsodo.

When the Sonsodo matter came up for hearing in the High Court on Tuesday, the Goa Waste Management Corporation made a submission stating that the Corporation is transporting 20 metric tons of wet waste from Sonsodo to the Cacora waste treatment plant for disposal. Similarly, the MMC made its submission that the balance waste from Sonsodo is being transported to the Saligao plant as per the Court order

At the last date of  hearing on August 30, the High Court had issued directions for the treatment of at least 20 metric tons of wet waste from the Margao Municipal Council at the Cacora waste treatment plant from September 1 on a daily basis, if necessary, as a part of its trial runs, given that the state-of-the-art facility has been set up for this purpose, saying “as it is, this plant requires waste for treatment and trial runs.”

Referring to the government directions in the order dated July 11, 2023 in respect of the transportation of wet waste of 30 MTs to the plant at Saligao, which is at a distance of about 45 km from Sonsodo, the High Court had observed last week that the transportation of waste to Saligao involves considerable costs. The treatment of such transported waste at Saligao strains the capacity of the Saligao plant. The plant at Saligao caters to the treatment of waste, mainly, in the district of North Goa”, the Court had observed.

The Court had further observed: “In contrast, the Cacora plant, a state-of-the-art plant, was established mainly to treat the waste from the South Goa district. This plant is at a distance of about 15 km from Sonsodo. This plant is ready, going by the reply before the Legislative Assembly. The treatment of waste from within the jurisdiction of MMC is an absolute necessity. Overstrain on the facilities at the Saligao Plant would also not be proper”, the Court had observed last week.
