As the State grapples with increasing vehicular density including the influx of drive-in tourists coupled with sub-standard roads and accidents, the police introduced the TRACK Centre “ Traffic Response and Congestion Control “ a new initiative aimed at streamlining traffic flow, enhancing road safety and ensuring swift emergency responses.
Touted as a cutting-edge facility in real-time traffic monitoring, Goa Police claim the Center will facilitate quicker and more efficient response to road incidents that will ultimately reduce congestion while improving safety and convenience for all commuters.
One example of TRACK's effectiveness was observed on August 24, when congestion near Candolim football ground was detected at 1:07 pm via Google Maps. The Anjuna traffic cell was promptly alerted, identifying roadside parking as the cause of the bottleneck. Within five minutes, traffic personnel were on the scene to clear the area.
In another incident, the TRACK Center demonstrated its vigilance in monitoring social media for real-time traffic issues. On August 26, a road blockage by a truck near a shop in Bicholim was posted by an X user at 11:10 am. The Bicholim police were informed and, according to their report, responded within three minutes. The obstruction was removed within half an hour.
Director General of Police Alok Kumar (IPS) stated that TRACK is designed to monitor various platforms such as social media and Google Maps, enabling authorities to stay informed about real-time traffic conditions reported by the public. The Center will also handle traffic-related calls through the police helpline Dial 112.
Kumar further emphasized the importance of TRACK in making Goa’s roads safer, reducing both fatalities and congestion. “We are committed to infusing technology into our operations, with TRACK being a prime example. We also plan for further infusion of technology in the future, not just for traffic management but also for other policing fields to enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness,” he added.
