Planting of saplings, removal of old files, obsolete furniture and junk material, cleanliness and sanitation drives within campuses, residential colonies, and market places were conducted by the ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute as part of its ‘Swachhta Pakhwada’ in different parts of the State from December 16 to 31.

Highlighting the various activities carried out during the Swachhta Pakhwada, ICAR-CCARI Director Dr E B Chakurkar said a cleanliness drive was carried out in Ibrampur, Veling and Parra villages under the ICAR’s initiative ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’.

“Guidance was provided to village panchayats on biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste disposal. They are also being assisted in producing compost from waste. Vermi-compost bags to 25 farmers from these villages were handed over on Kisan Diwas. Proper decomposition of biodegradable waste is not only environment-friendly but also can be a wealth generator,” said Dr Chakurkar.

“Due to COVID-19, everyone now understands the importance of cleanliness and hygiene.”

Administrative Officer Somnath informed that ICAR-CCARI is now a 90% paperless office and looking for complete digitisation records.

Senior Technical Officer Vinod Ubarhande demonstrated segregation of waste and preparation of vermi-compost.
