MARGAO
Superintendent of Police, South Sunita Sawant on Monday said she has initiated an inquiry into the lathicharge on The Goan photojournalist Santosh Mirajkar.

The district police chief has also mulled sensitising the police force on how to deal with the media in times of law and order situations when the media is the fourth pillar of society.

SP Sawant assured a delegation of journalists from South Goa that the inquiry initiated into the assault on The Goan photojournalist will soon be taken to a logical conclusion.

“Apart from the inquiry, I have decided to sensitise the police force to ensure the media is not targeted in times of law and order situations. I will also write to the higher police officials to conduct a similar exercise in respect of the IRB personnel so that sensitisation of the men in uniform will stop attacks on journalists like what happened in Margao on Saturday,” she said.

Saying the police department has taken strong cognizance of the assault on Mirajkar during the lathicharge on Saturday night at the old market circle, the district police chief said, “it’s indeed a matter of concern that the photographer was assaulted by the policemen even after acknowledging that he is a journalist.”

The delegation of journalists from South Goa expressed concern over the assault, more so when the photographer was attacked despite proving that he was a journalist.
