In a ghastly incident, a native of Jharkhand has been arrested by the Fatorda police for sexually assaulting two minor girls aged nine and eight, both sisters in the jurisdiction of the police station.
As the incident came to light on Thursday, children’s rights activist Auda Viegas reiterated her demand that the labour contractors hiring workers from outside the states are mandated to make provision for security for the children of the construction workers while the parents are at work.
Fatorda police informed that the accused person Chondula alias Chandu, residing at Gogol Housing Board, Fatorda, but a native of Jharkhand, repeatedly had sexual intercourse with two minor victim girls, aged 9 and 8, both sisters, in March and April.
Police said the accused assaulted the duo against their consent by threatening them with dire consequences if they inform about the same to anyone. The accused used to sexually assault one of the sisters when he used to bring her home from school by taking her to the roadside bushes.
The incident came to light on Thursday when the accused was caught red-handed by the aunt of the girls when he was molesting one of the girls. “After the aunt raised an alarm, the two sisters spilt the beans on how the accused has been sexually assaulting them since March last,” sources said.
Meanwhile, Viegas has demanded that the latest incident of rape of migrant construction workers has again brought to the fore the same old question about the absence of security for the children of these construction workers.
“When both the parents are at work on the field, the children are left alone and become susceptible to sexual exploitation. We have heard cases of sexual exploitation of the children of these migrant workers and the latest incident is a wake-up call for the authorities to mandate the labour contractors to make provision for the security of the children at their place of residence,” Viegas said.
The Fatorda police have registered a case under section 64, 351 r/w 3(5) of BNS 2023, besides sections 4 and 8 of POCSO Act and section 8(2) of the Goa Children's Act.
