A heartbreaking act of animal cruelty has come to light in Ganeshpuri, Mapusa, where two individuals allegedly abandoned kittens near a garbage dump, leaving them to fend for themselves in the wilderness.
The incident, reported Dexter Braganza, Honorary Executive Secretary of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (North Goa), has sparked outrage among animal lovers and activists.
According to the complaint, the accused, identified as the rider and pillion rider of a scooter (registration number GA 03 AL 1395), abandoned the helpless kittens last month (November 25) in an act that left them to endure a painful and neglected existence.
“This is not just about abandoning kittens; it’s about the lack of empathy towards sentient beings who rely on us for care and protection. Such actions are not only morally unacceptable but also a violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,” a staffer of the society said, requesting anonymity.
Following the complaint, the Anjuna Police Station registered a case under Section 325 of the BNS and Sections 3, 11(1)(i), and 11(1)(j) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
This incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws and greater awareness of the responsibilities of pet ownership.
Local residents and animal welfare groups have rallied around the case, urging swift action against the culprits.
“This isn’t just about legal action; it’s about setting an example that such cruelty will not be tolerated in our society,” the staffer added.
The kittens’ fate remains unknown, but this case serves as a stark reminder of the compassion needed in protecting vulnerable animals.
