Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has dismissed the campaign to preserve a banyan tree of religious significance by altering the alignment of an elevated corridor, calling it "entirely a political drama" that should be ignored.
Khaunte criticized those raising the issue, noting that they were present during the project's planning stages but failed to voice concerns at that time.
He referenced a recent candlelight vigil organized by locals and NGOs to save the banyan tree, suggesting that such demonstrations are insufficient.
"We are also concerned about the environment. Just by lighting a candle and making a show is not enough," Khaunte remarked, while speaking to journalists at a function in Mapusa.
The minister further alleged that some activists might be motivated by personal interests, implying that they aim to protect illegalities in the area.
He emphasized that the project's alignment was finalized between 2019 and 2021, with necessary consents obtained, and questioned why objections are being raised only now.
"The committee member who is raising the issue was in the government to decide on the project. We were in the opposition then," he stated.
Local residents have been opposing the translocation of the banyan tree, calling for a realignment of the project.
Some activists also recently met with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to discuss the matter.
Khaunte urged activists to focus on substantive issues, stating, "These people who are roaming around Goa should definitely move about. But they should take up good issues. The government definitely takes note of serious issues raised by some people."
The controversy continues as the government proceeds with the elevated corridor project, while activists and locals advocate for the preservation of the banyan tree.
