BELAGAVI
A medical team at the Belagavi’s KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital saved a precious life after performing a rare brain surgery on a one-year-old boy.

A successful surgery was conducted on the brain of the toddler for removal of a huge tumour that was otherwise fatal. What is more important is the fact that the complex and expensive surgery was carried out free of cost.

According to KLES doctors, the child from Jamkhandi taluk, Bagalkot district was suffering from a lethal brain tumour, due to which he would vomit continuously and refuse to eat food, while both eyes would move involuntarily and the child was unable to sit or stand with frequent falls in the bed.

A large tumour was detected in the cerebrum after an MRI brain scan. The child underwent the tumour surgery under the Arogya Karnataka scheme and the neurosurgeons successfully removed the entire tumour, gifting a new life to child. Presently, he is undergoing paediatric physiotherapy.

“Paediatric brain tumours commonly occur in the age group of 1 to 10 years and are malignant. Cerebellar paediatric tumours are located near the brainstem which contains the cardiac and respiratory centres and hence, require a very high level of surgical accuracy and skills for complete removal. Also considering the total blood volume in the body of these children, it’s an uphill task for the neurosurgeons,” Medical Director and CEO Dr M V Jali said.

“Thanks to modern technological advancement and the-state-of-the-art neurosurgical and paediatric facilities including operating microscope, neuro-navigation and paediatric ICU at our hospital, these surgeries are now very much possible with the best outcomes as compared to centres in India and abroad.”

The team of neurosurgeons comprising Dr Abhishek Patil and Dr Vikram TP performed the surgery and were assisted by a neuroanesthesia team comprising Dr Teena Desai and Dr Narendra Patil and chief Paediatrician Dr Tanmaya Metgud. KLES chairman Dr Prabhakar Kore has congratulated the team on this rare feat and urged citizens from across Belagavi and Goa region to avail of the facility at the hospital.
