Will the Margao City Fathers and Municipal babus explain to Madgavkars and Fatordekars the fate of the 2022 circular issued by the Director, Urban Development directing the Municipal bodies to assess illegal structures existing within the Municipal jurisdiction for the purpose of imposing house tax?
If sources are to be believed, hardly any progress has been made by the Margao civic body to assess the illegal houses and impose house tax for reasons best known to the city Fathers and the civic babus.
In the absence of assessment of the illegal houses, not only the civic body has been denied revenue by way of the house taxi, but, but other taxes payable to the Council such as sanitary/garbage collection and treatment. In fact, not only the illegal houses do not pay the mandatory house tax, but avail benefits of garbage collection by the civic body free of cost.
Sources in the know informed that the MMC Taxation section had prepared rough estimates as per the government 2022 circular, which showed the potential of mopping up substantial revenue by obtaining the security deposit equivalent to the construction license fee against such illegal constructions where the house tax is required to be imposed, but there seemed no will to implement the government’s circular till date.
