Locals stop wall construction on Bambolim beach

OLD GOA

Concerned locals forced the contractor to stop the construction of the retaining wall at the Bambolim beach, on Sunday morning, as the Curca panchayat has issued stop work notice for the same.

The locals informed The Goan that despite the stop work notice being issued by the Curca panchayat on March 10, work on the retaining wall continued even on Sunday morning.

Later, the locals accompanied by complainant advocate Suresh Palkar and local panch Suryakant Andrade forced the stoppage of the work citing the stop work notice.

“The work was going on in full swing with JCB machine and trucks used for the same despite the stop work notice issued by the Curca panchayat. However, today morning when some locals informed me about the same I immediately went to the site and after showing the stop work notice the contractor stopped the work,” Palkar informed and stated that he even alerted the Agassaim police about the activity.

Meanwhile, the Curca panchayat, which has issued the notice, has given a seven days time for the party undertaking the wall construction to submit all relevant documents failing which further action would be initiated under section 66 of the GPR Act, 1994.

It may be recalled that activists and locals under the banner of Goenkars Against Marina had, on March 9, opposed the construction of the retaining wall citing encroachment on the beach area after which advocate Suresh Palkar had filed a complaint with the Curca panchayat.

In his complaint, Palkar had urged the panchayat to stop the work and issue show cause notice to the party undertaking the construction.
