The Principal District and Sessions Court, North Goa, sentenced a murder convict to life imprisonment while his brother is sentenced to imprisonment for culpable homicide, in connection with a 2019 case involving the killing of their sibling amid a property dispute.
According to case details, Dnyaneshwar alias Gangadhar Kerkar (aged 50) and Vinod (aged 62), residents of Mapusa, assaulted their 32-year-old brother Vilas with a large PVC pipe and wooden danda, causing fatal injuries.
During the fight, when complainant sister Geeta attempted to intervene, both accused forcefully pushed her to the ground, inflicting injuries. The accused also threatened their neighbours with severe consequences when they tried to rescue the injured.
The case, investigated and chargesheeted by Investigating Officer Police Inspector Tushar Lotliker, also mentioned frequent fights between the brothers. It was also learnt that four months before the murder, Vilas had filed a police complaint against the two brothers for indulging in fights after consuming alcohol.
On Friday, the court convicted both accused, sentencing the first to life imprisonment for murder and the second under IPC 304 (ii) with a sentence already served.
