Mandrem Sarpanch Adv Amit Sawant submitted his resignation on Wednesday, six months ahead of the agreed tenure within the ruling group.
Sawant had been upset over the recent inauguration of the Mandrem police station as his name had not been included in the invitation card. He had then proceeded on a hunger strike on February 1 to highlight the issue but later withdrew his protest two days later. He had announced at that time that he would resign from the post of Sarpanch on February 21.
Incidentally, Sawant’s resignation comes six months ahead of the mutually agreed 2-year tenure within the ruling group. Sawant had been elected sarpanch in a dramatic manner in 2022 after the then sarpanch Mahesh Konadkar backed by former MLA Dayanand Sopte had resigned within 24 hours of getting elected.
Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar took control of the panchayat and the ruling panchas had agreed that Amit Sawant would serve as sarpanch for two years, while it would go to others for one year each.
