In preparation for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has announced plans to improve the organisation of the market for the sale of matoli items.
The council will accommodate between 300 to 350 vendors in the market on a first come, first served basis.
To ensure smooth operations, the entrance to the municipal market will be barricaded, and the movement of vehicles inside the market will be prohibited during the day.
Market Chairman, Sainath Raul, stated that the municipality aims to replicate the successful organisation of the market seen last year. "Vendors will be allowed to set up in designated, marked spots within the market," Raul said.
Eligible vendors will be required to collect tokens from the MMC office by presenting their Aadhar cards. The token system has been introduced to manage overcrowding in the market. The marking of vendor spots will take place on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1.
Raul also mentioned that firecracker vendors will be allocated space opposite the taxi stand while the sale of sweets and other farsan products by self-help groups will be permitted behind the Shakuntala statue.
To maintain cleanliness, five garbage bins will be placed at specific locations, and vendors are urged to dispose of waste in a centralised location for efficient collection.
"We will not allow vehicles in the market during the day. Vendors are advised to bring their goods into the market either early in the morning or late at night," Raul emphasised.
Councillors Anvi Korgaonkar, Vikas Arolkar, Barbara Carrasco, and Kishori Korgaonkar are members of the market committee overseeing these arrangements.
