A delegation of Margao Municipal New Market traders called on Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward chief Vijai Sardesai with a plea to take up their issue in the ensuing session of the Goa Legislative Assembly.
The Opposition leader said that the opposition will place on the floor of the House and explain why the Amendments brought to the Goa Municipalities Act will go against the interests of the traders.
“Since the government has brought an Amendment to the Act by way of an Ordinance, the matter will come before the House in the ensuing Assembly session,” he said, while promising to take up the cause of the traders in the House.
President of the New Market Association Vinod Shirodkar later told the media that the delegation has called on the Opposition Leader and the Goa Forward chief as part of the campaign to approach all the Ministers and MLAs and hand over to them memorandums explaining why and how the Ordinance goes against the interests of the merchants in the Municipal markets.
“The Ordinance speaks about auction of the shops after 10 years. Today, I am running the shop, which was given on lease by the Municipality to my grandfather,” he said, while pointing out that the Ordinance will take away the livelihoods of the traders and their families.
