Alarmed over the rising number of dog bites, the MLAs from the ruling benches on Monday called on the government to take immediate steps to tackle the growing menace of stray dogs.
The MLAs, including Michael Lobo, Krishna Salkar, Premendra Shet and Sankalp Amonkar, expressed concern over the increasing incidents of stray dog bites, particularly along the State’s beaches.
Mormugao MLA Amonkar brought the issue to the House’s attention, highlighting the growing population of stray dogs as a significant concern for both residents and tourists. Amonkar described packs of dogs roaming in public spaces such as markets, hospitals, streets and beaches, causing distress.
Calangute MLA Lobo said that the government's failure to tackle the menace has also affected tourism. “There are incidents of dog bites involving tourists. Tourists are running away from such beaches where the stray dog nuisance exists. They are worried about their safety,” he said.
“We can provide all facilities to tourists, but if it is not a safe place, then we cannot boost good tourism,” he said. He admitted the severity of the problem, emphasising the need for immediate action in the interest of tourism and public safety.
Mayem MLA Shet pointed out how the lack of funds restricts NGOs from managing the situation. He also said that the local bodies need to be roped in for the sterilisation of stray dogs.
